Me, Sharon

Home / About / Me, Sharon

Hi. I’m so glad you are here.  Welcome, welcome!

Here is the quick lowdown on me and uButterfly.

I’ve been a writer for most of my life (I have a trunk full of unpublished novels, plays and journals – some dating back to the fourth grade – to prove it). I’m now in corporate communications for a New Jersey hospital system. Previously, I worked as a reporter for local newspapers and magazines. Though much of my creative writing has happened in fits and starts and a lot of my work remains unfinished, writing is my home – the base to which I can always return no matter where I’ve been.

In the beginning of 2011, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I thought I’d write my way through it, as I’ve done with every difficult experience in my life. So, I said yes to writing about living with breast cancer for a hyperlocal online publication. Blogging was a powerful force for me, as was putting myself out there for others dealing with hardships.

Ever since, I’ve been dreaming about connecting in a larger way through my writing.  A dream cannot materialize without action, apparently – and regrettably. uButterfly is my action. I am not sure what it will become because I am starting before I am ready. At the very least, I hope it’s a place you will visit often to read and laugh and say, “Ahhh,” and feel like you are not alone.

Some things you should know about me:

1) I am married with three kids, ages 15, 18 and 20.

2) My husband is my high-school sweetheart; we met at a New Jersey mall when we were 15.

3) I live in the next town over from where I grew up.

4) I am almost 50, which completely blows my mind, because I still see myself as 25 – until I look in the mirror.

5) I often don’t finish what I start (if you are reading this now, it’s a miracle).

6) I worked for the FBI in D.C. while in college because I wanted to be a federal agent (see No. 5).

7) I regularly use foul language (my son Joseph was 3 years old when from the backseat of my husband’s car he called another driver a f*ing idiot).

8) My favorite color is black (second-favorite is gray)

9) I am a loyal friend (if you are in my inner circle you will be there forever – most of the time).

10) I am hard on myself.

11) I am restless and impatient.

12) I procrastinate (see No. 5, again).

13) I have a bad temper, but since THE BIG C, I am proud to be getting my calm on. Work in progress.

14) I’m stuck with many lasting effects of chemo and radiation, including cellulite, sagging, wrinkles, sparse hair on some areas of my scalp, numbness in my hands and feet, and lapses in memory so enormous I often can’t remember what I’m doing.

15) I have a serious plan-aversion disorder due to a couple of game-changing monkey wrenches that blew all my plans to bits. So I have no plan. For anything. I fly by the seat of my pants and make it up as I go along.

16) I love, love, love getting in my car and going on a road trip – thrown together at the 11th hour, of course. My last getaway was … hmm, I can’t remember – SHIT (see No. 15 – chemo brain – and No. 7)!

17) For that matter, I love, love, love going … anywhere.

18) Yoga is my breath of fresh air. I discovered the practice after I finished cancer treatment, when I was physically broken but becoming mentally and spiritually rooted. I do yoga with great intention, mismatching gear and a peeling pedicure (which I give myself – not that there’s anything wrong with hitting up a nail salon).

19) Aging is something I am not doing graciously.

20) I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up. But I know how I want to feel. And I want to share my knowledge, ideas and strategies that work to help you feel good, too!
